چکیده

This paper outlines a number of ways in which defeasible rules can contribute to the content selection and discourse structuring components of a text generation system. We suggest that, for certain types of descriptive text, the characterisation of discourse struc-turing mechanisms as operations on or involving defeasible rules provides an attractive framework for addressing important issues in content selection/structuring. We describe an architecture which incorporates defeasible rules into a systemic model of generation, and illustrate its use in the description of objects in a museum gallery. While defeasible rules are traditionally used in theorem-proving applications, to make predictions about the consequences of known facts, we are here concerned with three separate issues: (i) how such rules may need to be expressed by the NLG system in order to achieve its goals; (ii) how their interaction with facts about particular objects enables the use of valuable coherence relations; and (iii) how they are relevant in taking account of the system's user model.

Discourse Relations and Defeasible Knowledge

This paper presents a formal account of the temporal interpretation of text. The distinct natural interpretations of texts with similar syntax are explained in terms of defeasible rules characterising causal laws and Gricean-style pragmatic maxims. Intuitively compelling pat terns of defea, sible entailment that are supported by the logic in which the theory is expressed are shown to underly tem...

Parsing Unrestricted German Text with Defeasible Constraints

We present a parser for German that achieves a competitive accuracy on unrestricted input while maintaining a coverage of 100%. By writing well-formedness rules as declarative, defeasible constraints that integrate different sources of linguistic knowledge, very high robustness is achieved against all sorts of extragrammatical constructions.

Dual function of first position nominal groups in research article titles: Describing methods and structuring summary

Previous research has identified the nominal group as the most distinctive feature of the research article title. In contrast, the findings reported in this paper suggest Theme/Rheme is the dominant structure in title text. Theme/Rheme structures order and tie nominal groups in titles. When a title starts with a methodological term the first position nominal group acts as a theme marker. Thus, ...

The Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners

The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...

Argument Theory Change Applied to Defeasible Logic Programming

In this article we work on certain aspects of the belief change theory in order to make them suitable for argumentation systems. This approach is based on Defeasible Logic Programming as the argumentation formalism from which we ground the definitions. The objective of our proposal is to define an argument revision operator that inserts a new argument into a defeasible logic program in such a w...
